The Dan Call farm & home recently sold here in Lynchburg. The place was bought by a nice, young couple from California. As all of you know, Jack Daniel was raised in the old Dan Call house & had his first whiskey still on this property.
The couple is in the process of restoring the old house into it's original condition. The couple also have found & contacted all of the living descendants of Nearest Green. Nearest was the black man who worked for Dan Call & was said to be the one who taught a young Jack Daniel how to make whiskey.
These descendants were invited to the Call house & farm for a tour last weekend. Thankfully I was invited too.
None of these descendants had ever seen where their great grandfather lived & worked. All they had ever heard was stories of Nearest & Jack Daniel.
Here are some pictures of the Dan Call house as it stands today:

Here is the old stone wheel that was brought up from the old original still site to the house & serves as a table on the outside patio. The stone was used at the old grist mill to grind corn at Jack's original still.

We then went into the house.
There were 2 separate stairways that went to the upstairs. One led to the girls room & the other to the boys room. There was a wall between them to keep them separated.
The Call's had 18 children (some died very young) plus a young Jack Daniel.
Here is the stairway leading up to the girls room.

The room where the girls stayed.
The old wallpaper has been removed & newspapers from 1898 were found behind it.

After the wallpaper was removed, several words had been painted on the walls using an old stencil.
They read "DH Call" and above the name was "Sour Mash Corn Whiskey".
Several of these were found in Jack's old room.

About 200 yards from the Call home has always been a small house that was rented to various people who worked on the farm. During the recent renovations, the new couple decided to repair & update this rental house.

When the renovations started, they were pulling the paneling & paper off the inside walls & found the old house was a log home.
After some research and talking to the Green descendants, it was found that this house was where Nearest Green lived in the mid 1800's.

We then headed back to the site of the original still site of Dan Call & a young Jack Daniel.
I have posted these pictures before on another thread.
There is not much there except for the rock foundation of the old still house & the foundation of a one room house that is believed to be where Nearest Green lived before he moved into the log house near the Call home.
The original spring & some iron piping are still visible.

We then headed across the road from the Call house looking for the cemetery where Nearest Green was said to be buried.
The house in this picture now stands on the site where the Union Lutheran Church stood.
This is where Dan Call was a minister.

On the opposite hill from the church site we found this old cemetery.
It had tombstones that dated back to the 1830's, but we did not find any Green's.

I have always heard & been told by old-timers here in Lynchburg that Dan Call's original still was directly behind his house, not the one I just showed pictures of & the one the Distillery claims to be Jack Daniel's original still site.
Here is a picture taken from the back of the Call house looking across a field into the woods.

I have never had a chance to search the area & it was getting dark, but I decided to try a walk into the woods to see if I could find the old still site. I headed across the field, got chased by a mad bull, but made it to the woods. Guess what? I FOUND IT!!!

These are pictures of Dan Call's original still site. There is a cave spring and a well house still standing. There are also iron pipes laying where the still would have been.

After some research and talking to some locals, I found that this still was where Dan Call and Nearest Green made whiskey before a young Jack Daniel ran away from home & moved in with the Call's.
After Jack arrived, the still was moved to the other site & Jack Daniel eventually purchased it.

It was really a fun day & I learned a lot with the Green family & the new owners of the farm & house.
Hopefully, when anyone visits us & wants to see these historical sites, we can show them.
The new owners have given us permission to visit any time we wish, but that could change.

Hope everyone enjoyed.

Great pictures Mike. Nice detective work on finding the missing still. Looks like that house needed lots of work.

great to hear they are restoring it. I have been to and seen the site behind the house with mr McGees permission several years ago. it is very cool that it is still there,
