I am just guessing, but I would guess that there must be some legal reason they have to be putting it in the barrel.

I think it’s a licensing issue, they had this problem with the Unaged Rye, they couldn’t call it a Whiskey because it hadn’t been in a barrel

Someone at BF or the distillery must have forgot about the issue with trying to call the unaged Rye a whiskey.  Then just call it a spirit and keep it out of the barrel.
